Your Questions, Answered

What are preventive dental treatments?

Preventive dental treatments are designed to keep your teeth and gums healthy. They aim to prevent issues like cavities, gum disease, and enamel wear before they start. At Dan Roberts, DMD, our preventive treatments include regular exams and cleanings, the application of sealants to protect teeth, and the use of night guards for those who grind their teeth.

How often should I visit the dentist for preventive care?

We recommend you visit us for preventive care, such as exams and cleanings, every 6 months. However, we may suggest a different schedule based on your specific dental health needs.

What happens during a preventive dental exam?

We’ll check your teeth and gums for any signs of problems, such as cavities or gum disease. We may also take x-rays to see what’s happening beneath the surface of your teeth and gums.

Are dental cleanings really necessary?

Yes! Dental cleanings are a key part of preventive care. They remove plaque and tartar that you can’t get rid of with brushing and flossing alone. This helps prevent cavities and gum disease.

What are dental sealants and who should get them?

Sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). They prevent food and plaque from getting stuck in the grooves of the teeth, reducing the risk of cavities. Sealants are particularly helpful for children and teenagers but can be useful for adults as well.

Do nightguards really help? How do I know if I need one?

Nightguards can be very helpful for people who grind their teeth at night, a condition known as bruxism. Grinding can cause tooth damage, jaw pain, and headaches. A nightguard protects your teeth from grinding. Signs you might need one include waking up with jaw pain, headaches, or noticing your teeth are wearing down.

How can I maintain my dental health between visits?

Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily to remove plaque from between your teeth, eat a balanced diet, and avoid sugary snacks and drinks. These steps can help keep your teeth and gums healthy until your next dental visit!
